Guide to Tokyo’s Trendiest Coffee Spots

I’ve always enjoyed discovering coffee shops back home, so naturally, I make it a point to find local favourites when travelling. On my recent trips to Tokyo, I’ve found some of the most stylish and well-designed coffee spots that I’m excited to share with you.

Tokyo is a city that’s both vast and vibrant, and immersing yourself in a café can truly enhance the experience. With numerous neighbourhoods from Shibuya to Shinjuku, each offering its own array of coffee shops, Tokyo is a coffee lover’s paradise.

Having visited Tokyo twice now—check out my first guide here and the alternative guide here—I’ve compiled a list of some of the coolest cafes in the city. While this isn’t an exhaustive list, it’s a fantastic starting point for your coffee adventure. Get ready to discover some of Tokyo’s finest coffee spots!

    Onibus Nakameguro

One of my top picks, Onibus is nestled away from the main street. This charming two-storey café is a true gem, offering some of the best coffee in Tokyo within a stunning setting. Positioned right by the train tracks, you can watch the metro zoom by from the window. I visited twice on my last trip—it was that good!

    Coffee Supreme

A delightful independent roaster, Coffee Supreme was a welcome surprise on my latest trip. Their espresso is excellent, and they offer a tasty cheesy toast to complement your coffee. The seating is limited to a few bar stools, so it’s ideal for a quick takeaway.

      SHOZO Cafe

Though more of a tea spot, SHOZO deserves a mention. Previously one of Tokyo’s most photographed coffee shops, SHOZO has relocated to a new address a few blocks away from the original (details below). It’s close to the busy Omotesando area and is a lovely spot to relax if you can snag a seat.

        CAMELBACK Sandwich & Espresso

Found near Yoyogi Park, CAMELBACK is a fantastic find with multiple locations across Tokyo. Their coffee is superb, and their sandwiches are exceptional. Ideal for a hearty breakfast with great coffee, their pour-over and baguette sandwiches are particularly noteworthy.

Address: 42-2 Kamiyamacho, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0047, Japan

          Cafe Kitsune

A staple in Tokyo’s third-wave coffee scene, Cafe Kitsune recently reopened in a new Aoyama location, just a few blocks from its previous spot. While their coffee is good, I particularly enjoy their matcha.

Address: Japan, 〒107-0062 Tokyo, Minato City, Minamiaoyama, 3 Chome−15−9 MINOWA Omotesando 3F

            Blue Bottle Coffee Tokyo

Blue Bottle Coffee boasts several locations throughout Tokyo. My favourite is the one in Aoyama, near Omote-Sando Station, set amongst the trees. It’s a serene place to spend a few hours.

Address: 3 Chome-13-14 Minamiaoyama, Minato City, Tokyo 107-0062, Japan

              About Life Coffee Brewers

Located just west of Shibuya Station, About Life is an outpost of Onibus Coffee. It’s perfect for grabbing coffee on the go or relaxing with some indoor-outdoor seating. There’s also a grab-and-go coffee stand one block west of Shibuya Station.

Address: 1 Chome-19-8 Dogenzaka, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0043, Japan

                Yazawa Coffee Roasters

A favourite discovery from my second trip, Yazawa is tucked away in the fish market. Located down a dimly lit hallway, it’s a one-man operation where coffee is brewed fresh on the spot—ideal for taking with you as you explore the market.

Address: 4 Chome-10-12 Tsukiji, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0045, Japan

                  LIFE Son

Combining a restaurant and coffee shop, LIFE Son features one of the larger spaces in Tokyo. It’s a great spot for a sit-down breakfast paired with excellent coffee.

Address: 4 Chome-5-13 Yoyogi, Shibuya City, Tokyo 151-0053, Japan

                    Bear Pond Espresso

This small coffee bar in the heart of Shimokitazawa is a standout in the neighbourhood, offering a distinctive coffee experience.

                      Little Nap Coffee Stand

I absolutely loved Little Nap Coffee Stand for its welcoming atmosphere and variety of coffees.
