Penrith’s café culture has undergone a noticeable shift in recent years. Once overlooked by Sydney’s inner-city food crowd, the western suburb is now home to a growing number of independent cafés focused on fresh ingredients, speciality coffee, and stylish interiors. If you’re heading west, here are five standout spots that capture Penrith’s new culinary spirit.
Mr Watkin’s
📍 467 High Street, Penrith
A local lad with global experience, chef Rod Parbery returned to his hometown to create something of his own. Together with fellow chef Wayne Jenkins, he launched Mr Watkin’s – an eclectic mix of café, bar, and restaurant – in late December. Named after 18th-century explorer Captain Watkin Tench, the space blends historical charm with modern flair. Stop in for brunch and a quality coffee during the day, or come by in the evening for share plates, cocktails and the occasional sing-along around the antique piano.

Henri Marc
📍 Shop 2, 438 High Street, Penrith
Tucked behind a chemist on the bustling High Street, Henri Marc has become something of a local institution since opening its doors in 2013. The stripped-back, industrial-style café serves a rotating menu that’s small but considered – with the much-loved caramel toast always making an appearance. Founded by Sophia and Aaron Bernecki, it’s a top spot for a long brunch or a quick Reuben Hills takeaway.

Percy Plunkett
📍 146 Station Street, Penrith
Situated in a beautifully restored 19th-century cottage, Percy Plunkett combines old-world charm with contemporary flair. Interiors by designer Matt Woods strike the perfect balance of heritage and modern, complete with floral touches and cobbled walkways. Helmed by local chef Justin Ristevski, the daytime menu spans fresh, seasonal fare – all served with a nod to the building’s historic namesake, Percy Plunkett.

High Street Depot
📍 488–490 High Street, Penrith
Beloved by locals, High Street Depot is known for its crowd-pleasing mix of nourishing and indulgent plates. The menu covers all the classics, but don’t miss their short-run specials – past highlights have included scallop-studded cauliflower soup and decadent polenta with speck bacon and parmesan. Their French toast is a regular favourite, ideally paired with one of their excellent coffees.
