Rolling Penny

Rolling Penny, located at the south end of King Street in Newtown, prides itself on serving delicious food and coffee while fostering a welcoming community atmosphere. Opened in March 2016 by siblings Martin and Penny Morgan, the cafe sources ingredients locally and prepares everything from scratch in-house, including their bread from The Bread & Butter Project and coffee beans from nearby roasters, The Little Marionette. The menu features colorful twists on classic dishes, such as the hot-pink Bircher bowl soaked in cold-pressed beetroot and apple juice, topped with yogurt, fruit, and honey, along with sandwiches like the Penny Waldorf and Martin Reuben.

The cafe’s design is minimalist, with raw timber and black exposed conduits creating a relaxed ambiance, while rotating works by local artists add pops of color to the whitewashed walls. Rolling Penny has gained a cult following over the years for its commitment to local produce and inventive breakfast offerings, including its renowned brekky rolls that feature fresh and unexpected ingredients piled onto Brickfields bread or soft milk buns. The cafe also offers a selection of Little Marionette Coffee for a caffeine boost and alcoholic beverages like mimosas and bloody marys to accompany your meal, making it a popular spot for brunch among locals and visitors alike.

Despite a brief shutdown in 2022, Rolling Penny has reopened its doors with a strong commitment to serving its community through events and pop-ups, further solidifying its reputation as a beloved neighborhood cafe in Newtown. With its top-notch brekky burgers and dedication to quality and creativity, Rolling Penny continues to provide a unique and memorable dining experience for patrons looking for something beyond the standard bacon and egg roll.
